Sunset Hills Montessori School

Reston Pre-School and Private Elementary 20th Anniversary. Sunset Hills Montessori School is nestled in the woods of Reston, on the edges of Lake Audubon and Lake Thoreau. We provide a peaceful school setting for children ages 18 months to 3rd grade.

 Elizabeth Hamel (Pre-Primary Lead Room 101) Liz grew up in Worcester, MA and studied Child Development at Tufts University in Medford, MA. At Tufts, she worked at their lab school as a Kindergarten and Extended Day Program assistant. There, Liz became passionate about working with young children and their families to ensure that their first school experiences were positive. Liz joined the SHMS community in 2012 as a Pre-Primary assistant, and went on to pursue her Infant/Toddler Montessori training in 2014 at the Barrie Institute for Advanced Montessori Studies in Silver Spring, MD. In her spare time, Liz enjoys yoga, sewing, drawing, and hiking with her boyfriend, Jesse, and their dog, Daisy.

Erin Falls (Pre-Primary Assistant Room 101 ) Erin Falls joined the Sunset Hills Montessori family 2009 as a parent and in 2013 as a faculty member.  Before starting her family, Erin worked for Raytheon as a Marketing Events Manager for 12 years.  Even before having children Erin was drawn to the Montessori philosophy.  Erin has two boys, Joey and Koa, who are both currently happily enrolled at Sunset Hills.  Erin, her husband Craig and boys live in Reston, VA.  In her free time Erinloves to hike, read and rescue every stray cat in Reston.

Dawn Dann (Pre-Primary Assistant Room 101 ) Dawn is one of the assistant teachers in Pre-Primary with Katherine Talamantes.   After attending Washington Business School, Dawn managed and supervised for 20 years at Domino’s Pizza and then resigned to be a full time mom. Dawn lives in Leesburg, VA with her husband and four children.  Her children all attended a Montessori school in Sterling from pre-primary age through kindergarten.  Dawn did countless hours volunteering at the Elementary school from room mom, to co-director of weekly communication folders, helping with after school running clubs, directing variety shows, helping with school plays and much more.   She has also continued to help at the middle school and high school activities.  Dawn helped with summer camp in 2014 at SHMS and really enjoyed working with the children and is excited to be part of such a great school.

Joni Purdue (Pre-Primary Lead Room 102)

 

Joni Purdue has been working with children since 1998 and with toddlers in a Montessori setting since 2004.  Joni received her Montessori infant/toddler credentials from the Center for Montessori Teacher Training-North Carolina in 2007.  Joni has acted as a mentor to toddler teachers and parents and enjoys conducting parent education workshops.   Joni has an 11 year old son and a 9 year old daughter and enjoys hiking, camping, reading and singing.

Liz Ballew (Pre-Primary Assistant Room 102   I am originally from Phoenix, Arizona and moved to Northern Virginia two years from San Diego to attend George Mason University. During my time at George Mason, I volunteered as a student mentor at an Elementary School in Fairfax and realized how much I truly loved working with children. After receiving my bachelor’s degree in Psychology, I began working as an assistant Montessori Teacher in Leesburg. I joined SHMS this year and I am thrilled to be teaching at an amazing school!

I am originally from Phoenix, Arizona and moved to Northern Virginia two years from San Diego to attend George Mason University. During my time at George Mason, I volunteered as a student mentor at an Elementary School in Fairfax and realized how much I truly loved working with children. After receiving my bachelor’s degree in Psychology, I began working as an assistant Montessori Teacher in Leesburg. I joined SHMS this year and I am thrilled to be teaching at an amazing school!

Ann Tumang (Pre-Primary Assistant Room 102) Ms.Ann has been working in SHMS since 2011. She started out as a Sunset Club staff and later became its director for a year.  Prior to her job in SHMS, she was a homeschool mom to her 3 children for 5 years and assisting her minister husband in church administration.  She was born and raised in the Philippines and took B.S. Foreign Service. Her husband and children moved the United States in 2001 for a mission work.  She’s been working with children and families since her college days and as a pastor’s wife she is currently serving as the director of the Children’s Ministry in her church.  She has a true passion in what she’s doing and she loves to work at SHMS because of its family-like environment.
